Let's first loook at the first most common and basic consonants:
ㄱ ㄴ ㅁ ㅅ ㅇ
The first consonant is ' ㄱ ' , called [gi-yeok] . At the beginning of a character it is pronounced as a weak ' k ' or ' g' .
The following two diagrams demonstrate a character that begins with ' ㄱ ' , the first shows a combination wth a horizontal vowel and the second with a vertical vowel.
At the end of a character, it is pronouncedas a barely audible ' g ' which is pronounced by rapidly blocking the ' g ' sound.
We will introduce each consonant and vowel with the following diagram;
ㄱ
go [ k, g ] 고기 [go-gi] meat
bag [ g ] ,목 [mog ] : neck
in the diagram, you can see the symbol and its name on the left hand column.
The name of the symbol is writtern in Hangeul as well as in its Romanized form :
'기역' [ gi-yeok]
thus the pronunciation of the romanized text follows the rules described in the previous section and not standard English pronunciation.
The middle part of the diagram depicts the pronunciation, using English words and underlining the part of the word that sounds like the character when pronounced in standard English.
The [g ] with square brackets again indicates the romanized text.
The top half indicates the pronunciation if the consonants is at the beginning of a character, the bottom half it it is at the end.
